Comfortable & Healthy Livestock for the Summer

printer friendly viewprinter friendly
Heat can have negative effects on animal health. Because of the heat and humidity livestock tends to be more stressed this time of year. Take time to make sure your animals are comfortable and stay healthy during the summer.
·         Provide clean, cool water at all times. If your animals are out to pasture make sure they have water either outside in a tub or bucket or they are able to get inside to water.
·         Provide shade for your livestock through trees or a building.
·         Provide good ventilation if your animals are inside through the use of fans and sprinklers.
·         Control flies by treating your animals with fly sprayor adding flaps to your rub which can apply the repellent on more of the animal.
·         Don’t over-exercise or transport animals during the hottest part of the day.
·         Don’t over graze. If pastures lack good greens for your livestock they may not be getting all the nutrients they need.
If animals are too hot they tend to eat less. If you notice more feed left in the bunk, take the necessary measures to reduce the heat stress on your animals. That may mean changing their feed, feeding schedule or increasing needed supplements to their diet. Check with your local veterinarian or feed nutritionist.
